History

St. Paul was first called Pig’s Eye Landing. In 1841, a Roman Catholic Missionary named Lucien Galtier built a log chapel in honor of apostle Paul, serving the soldiers at Fort Snelling on the Mississippi River. The fort is also responsible for creating growth in the area, which is now the second largest city in Minnesota. St. Paul was made the capital of the Minnesota Territory in 1849 and became the official capital in 1858 when Minnesota was brought into the Union as the 32nd state.
